Rail-Trail Council
of Northeastern Pennsylvania

Renewing Northeast Pennsylvania’s historic pathways as recreational trails for all to enjoy…

The Rail-Trail Council of NEPA, Inc. is a non-profit organization developing recreational trails in northeastern Pennsylvania. The office is located in the Borough of Union Dale, Susquehanna County, in the Cables Store Building, alongside the D&H Rail-Trail. The RTC has over 1400 members who support the organization with membership dollars and volunteer hours. The Board is made up of 30 members, a part-time executive director, and a part-time program manager.

The D&H Rail-Trail is 38 miles long from Simpson to the New York border near Susquehanna, PA. The D&H connects at its southern end to the 32-mile Lackawanna River Heritage Trail (LRHT) and together these two trails are considered a 70-mile major greenway in the state.  Many improvement projects are underway.  By summer 2018, there will be 20 miles of improved trail from Carbondale to Ararat, with a surface suitable for hybrid bikes.

The O&W Rail-Trail begins in Simpson and continues 8-miles to Stillwater Dam.  It continues as an ATV-Snowmobile trail from Stillwater to Lakewood.  The section that continues from Lakewood to the Delaware River near Hancock, NY is owned by the townships and used as a ‘no-winter-maintenance road.  The trail is graded, original railbed surface requiring a mountain bike.

The Endless Mountains Trail is a 10-mile trail under development from Alford to Montrose.  The trail is original railbed surface requiring a mountain bike.

The trails attract equestrians, runners, walkers, hikers, geocachers, snowshoers, snowmobilers and cross-country skiers. We offer programs all year round on and around our trails that highlight each activity.

D&H Distance Run

A half-marathon and 5K race is held every year, the Sunday after Labor Day on the D&H Rail-Trail in Forest City.  It’s an out & back run on the trail and a perfect training run in preparation for the Steamtown Marathon

A survey of trail users was conducted for two years, concentrating on winter users and the economic impact made on the local communities.

Projects in Motion

The Council has begun a capital campaign to raise funds for numerous projects underway on our trail system.  Many projects require matching funds for grants.
